Afrobeats sensation Tiwa Savage has opened up about the drastic transformation of her public image, revealing that she was once a tomboy before her ex-husband and former manager, Tunji “Teebillz” Balogun, reshaped her brand.
In a recent conversation on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast hosted by Joey Akan, Savage shared that her signature sultry style wasn’t always part of the plan.
Before fame, she worked behind the scenes as a songwriter in Los Angeles, often dressed in oversized clothes and little makeup. According to her, femininity and fashion weren’t priorities music was.
However, upon returning to Nigeria to pursue a solo career, things changed drastically. Teebillz saw potential in crafting a bold and daring image for her, something that would distinguish her in the emerging Afrobeats scene.
“Naturally, I wasn’t into glam. But Teebillz saw the gap. He encouraged me to start going to the gym, fixing my brows, wearing wigs it was a full makeover,” Tiwa said.
The shift, while strategic, sparked backlash. Savage said her outfits often drew criticism, and there were moments she felt shut out of the Nigerian music space, including being denied stage time at shows due to her appearance.
She recounted how her early single Love Me was once banned, and how she even retreated to the U.S. due to the negative reactions. But encouragement from her team and fans brought her back.
Despite the hurdles, Savage noted that the transformation ultimately helped her carve a lane for herself in the industry. Today, she’s not just a top-tier singer but a cultural icon who challenged stereotypes in music and fashion.
