Afrobeats sensation Iyanya has opened up about a lesser-known chapter of his music journey, revealing how he narrowly missed a chance to participate in the inaugural season of Nigerian Idol.
According to the singer, he auditioned in Calabar alongside Omawumi, and they were the only two successful contestants selected from that centre. However, despite scaling through the auditions, Iyanya was forced to forgo the finals due to a scheduling conflict with his final year examinations at the university.
The singer, known for hits like Kukere and Ur Waist, said that moment was a tough decision, but education had to take priority. Interestingly, just a year after that missed opportunity, fate smiled on him as he emerged winner of the maiden season of Project Fame West Africa, which launched his music career in full force.
In a recent chat with Hip TV, Iyanya reflected on how far he and Omawumi have come. From being contestants to now judging the current season of Nigerian Idol, their journey is a full-circle moment. “It’s wild to think how everything played out,” Iyanya noted. “Missing Idol back then felt like a setback, but Project Fame gave me everything I needed.”
Iyanya’s story is a reminder that delays are not denials. His decision to prioritise his education ultimately paved the way for a greater platform that skyrocketed him to stardom.
Today, he continues to thrive not just as an artiste but also as a mentor and judge, helping discover the next generation of stars.
His inspiring journey reflects the power of timing, preparation, and destiny in the world of entertainment.
