Nollywood actor Gideon Okeke has shared his thoughts on the cultural meanings behind how Yoruba and Igbo parents name their children.
In a post on Instagram, Okeke observed that Yoruba names are often rooted in hope and aspirations for the child’s future, serving as a form of prayer or projection. In contrast, he noted that Igbo names tend to reflect past struggles, personal experiences, or family challenges.
“Yorubas name their children based on their hopes for that child’s future. Like a prayer/projection,” he wrote.
“Igbos name their children based on the pains, experiences, and turmoil the parents or family have gone through in life.”
The actor also expressed interest in expanding his understanding of cultural naming traditions by saying, “I would actually love to have Hausa friends.”
