Nigerian rapper and actor Falz has shed light on the concept behind his latest album, The Feast, stressing the need for Africans to move beyond self-centered thinking and focus more on community development.
During a recent appearance on Naija FM, Falz spoke about the widespread mindset of individualism in Africa, which he believes continues to hinder the continent’s advancement.
“The message I’m pushing across is ‘community.’ I feel like we need a sense of community because the mentality that we have in this country and Africa is the ‘every man for himself’ one, and it’s not good,” he said.
According to him, both citizens and political leaders are often driven by personal interests, neglecting the collective good. He noted that true progress will only be possible when people start looking out for each other.
“We constantly complain about how the government isn’t good. Why? We need to think about the collective, every person, and we need to be there for each other,” Falz added.
He went on to criticise African leaders for caring only about themselves and their families while ignoring the people they’re meant to serve.
Although the album doesn’t express its message in an overly direct or political way, Falz explained that it was deliberately crafted to make listeners think deeply.
“The only way we can progress and reach our full potential as a continent is if we move together. That’s the general message of my album, even though it’s not literal. It’s not as intense and direct as some of my other ones. With this one, you need to sit and listen,” he explained.
The Feast marks another chapter in Falz’s journey of using music to spark conversation and drive awareness on societal issues.
