Nigerian music sensation Davido has sparked conversation across social media after disclosing that artists in the country can be paid as much as $400,000 to perform at naming ceremonies.
Speaking during an interview on Tap In With TT, a clip of which was shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, the award-winning singer drew parallels between Nigeria and India in terms of extravagant celebrations. According to him, wealthy Nigerians go to great lengths to make personal events unforgettable by hiring top entertainers.
“In Nigeria, you can get booked for a naming ceremony – $400K,” Davido said. “It’s just like in India, they celebrate everything. Whether it’s a wedding or birthday, once there’s money involved, the highlight is having a big artist perform.”
His comment quickly triggered reactions online, with many expressing surprise at the hefty figures artists can command for private gigs, especially for intimate events like naming ceremonies.
