Popular Nigerian fashion designer, Veekee James, has publicly called out a Senegalese designer known as King Corset for allegedly replicating one of her viral dress designs without giving her credit.
Taking to Instagram, Veekee expressed her disappointment and frustration after discovering that King Corset had created a documentary that showcased a near-exact copy of her iconic dress. In a strongly worded post, she criticized the designer for lacking creativity and accused them of intellectual theft.
“How on earth do you copy someone’s viral design 100% and have the guts to do a documentary?” she wrote. Veekee didn’t mince words as she questioned how such unoriginality could be rewarded or sustained in the fashion industry. She labeled the act as pure theft, stressing that the failure to credit the original creator reflects a deep lack of integrity and professionalism.
The award-winning designer, however, ended her post on a slightly lighter note, stating that the incident had inadvertently given King Corset free publicity. “There’s more where the creativity came from. That’s why I don’t bother with y’all these days,” she added, emphasizing her confidence in her originality and talent.
Despite the controversy, Veekee James wished her industry colleague well, but maintained that such unethical behavior was a key reason why many designers struggle to succeed long-term.
Her post quickly stirred reactions online, with many of her followers and industry peers supporting her stance and condemning the alleged plagiarism.
This isn’t the first time Veekee has spoken out about the challenges of maintaining originality in the fashion world, especially in a competitive digital age where ideas are often recycled without acknowledgment.
