Nollywood actress Uche Jombo has responded to backlash on social media regarding her perceived lack of public support for her colleague and friend, Chioma Akpotha, at the 2025 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
Chioma Akpotha emerged victorious in the Best Lead Actress category, beating out several top contenders including Bimbo Ademoye, Hilda Dokubo, and Uche Montana. However, when she was announced as the winner, she was notably absent, prompting actor Femi Adebayo to accept the award on her behalf.
This sparked debate online, especially after a user on X (formerly Twitter) questioned why Jombo—who was present at the event—didn’t step up to collect the award for her friend.
The user commented: “Uche Jombo should have picked up Chioma’s award, not Femi Adebayo.”
Reacting to the criticism, Jombo explained that the decision made sense professionally. She clarified that Femi Adebayo was both the producer and director of the film for which Chioma won the award, making him the most appropriate person to accept it.
“He is her producer and director. The right person to pick it up for her,” Jombo replied.
The award-winning film, Seven Doors, is a royal-themed drama featuring Chioma as one of a king’s wives. The movie has earned critical praise for its storytelling and performances, particularly Chioma’s lead role.
Earlier in the year, Adebayo praised Chioma’s contribution to the film, calling her talent "pure magic" and revealing that casting her was inspired by a spiritual conviction. Despite initially turning down the role, Chioma later accepted, saying she felt deeply drawn to the script.
Jombo’s response appears to have cooled tensions, with many fans acknowledging the rationale behind her explanation.
