A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has sentenced social media influencer and TikToker Murja Kunya to six months in prison for abusing the Nigerian currency.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kano Zonal Command, secured the conviction on Wednesday before Justice Simone Amobeda.

Kunya was initially arrested in January 2025 after a video surfaced online showing her spraying Naira notes for entertainment while staying at the Tahir Guest Palace hotel in Kano. Her actions were deemed a violation of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which forbids the abuse and mutilation of the Naira.

After her arrest, she was granted administrative bail pending her arraignment. However, she later went into hiding in an attempt to avoid prosecution.

Following weeks of surveillance, EFCC operatives re-arrested Kunya on Sunday, March 16, 2025. She was arraigned on May 20 and pleaded guilty to the amended one-count charge.

Justice Amobeda subsequently sentenced her to six months imprisonment, marking another conviction under the EFCC’s ongoing clampdown on Naira abuse.
