Nigerian rapper Ruggedman has dismissed reports alleging he was detained by police at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, Yaba, stating the claims are completely false.
The rumour originated after human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu alleged that the rapper had been arrested and was being mistreated due to a disagreement linked to the Performing Musicians Employers Association of Nigeria (PMAN).
Addressing the issue on Instagram on Saturday, Ruggedman debunked the allegation, insisting that the story was fabricated by individuals seeking to damage his image. He clarified that a petition was indeed filed against him and other PMAN members, but the case had nothing to do with theft.
“The claim that I was arrested for stealing money is a lie. It’s a fake story. This is just a smear campaign launched by bitter individuals,” he said.
Ruggedman explained that the petition in question was submitted by Pretty Okafor, the current president of PMAN, and it involved missing funds within the association’s office—not direct accusations of theft.
He stated, “There’s a petition against me, Sunny Neji, Zaaki Azzay, and a few others. It’s about missing money at the PMAN office, not about us stealing it. There’s no proof that anyone saw me or the others with any money.”
The rapper also claimed that Pretty Okafor had previously been suspended from his role due to alleged unauthorized actions, and the petition was a retaliatory move against the same members who supported his suspension.
“The same executives who suspended him are now the targets of his petition. Yet he still has to provide evidence that links us to any financial misconduct,” Ruggedman added.
In August 2024, PMAN’s national executive council had announced the indefinite suspension of Ruggedman, alongside Sunny Neji, Zaaki Azzay, and JFO Baba Ojonorgua, citing allegations of misconduct.
