Celebrated Kenyan literary giant and political activist, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, has passed away at the age of 87.


The news of his death was confirmed by his daughter, Wanjiku wa Ngugi, in a heartfelt Facebook post on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.


“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our dad, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, this Wednesday morning, 28th May 2025,” she wrote. “He lived a full life and fought a good fight. As was his last wish, let’s celebrate his life and work. Rîa ratha na rîa thŭa. Tŭrî aira!”


She added that the family’s spokesperson, Nducu wa Ngugi, would release details regarding the late writer’s celebration of life in due course.


Born on January 5, 1938, in rural Kenya, Ngũgĩ rose to international prominence through his powerful literary works and tireless advocacy for African languages, identity, and decolonisation.


Over the course of his career, Ngũgĩ authored a wide range of novels, essays, and plays that tackled themes such as colonialism, cultural resistance, post-independence struggles, and social justice.


Beyond literature, he was deeply committed to using his voice and pen to champion African narratives, often writing in his native Gikuyu language and calling on African intellectuals to embrace indigenous languages in their works.


Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o leaves behind a rich legacy that has shaped African literature and inspired generations of writers, thinkers, and activists around the world.
