Senegalese-American singer Akon has opened up about his significant contributions to the rise of the Afrobeats genre, crediting his collaborations with Nigerian artists and music executives in the late 2000s and early 2010s as the foundation for what the world now knows as Afrobeats.

In a recent interview with Sherri, Akon discussed his early work with Nigerian stars such as Wizkid, Banky W, P-Square, and D’banj, which helped set the stage for the ‘Afrobeats to the World’ movement.

He recalled how, in 2008, he signed Wizkid to his label Konvict Muzik and worked closely with him and Banky W in Nigeria. Akon emphasized how this collaboration, along with others, played a pivotal role in shaping the genre.

“2008 was my last official album, which was the ‘Freedom’ album. And then I was producing the music for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. From there, I went to Nigeria. What we created in Nigeria was what you see now and hear now as Afrobeats,” Akon explained.

Reflecting on his influence as a global ambassador for African music, Akon stated, “It [opening the global door for African music] is the role God put me in. I just feel like I am a beacon to somebody’s success. I don’t know who it is going to be but everything we have touched so far has been really successful. And I’m appreciative for that.”

Akon’s involvement in the African music scene has undeniably been a catalyst in bringing the continent’s music to the forefront of the global stage, and he remains grateful for the success his collaborations have helped foster.
