Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck has responded to the sustained backlash surrounding his lyrics in the 2023 hit single Cast, a collaboration with Shallipopi.

The track, which features references to women’s financial dependence on men, drew criticism from activists and listeners who labeled the lyrics as degrading and misogynistic. The controversy has persisted since the song’s release, fueling ongoing debates about gender portrayal in Nigerian hip-hop.

Addressing the issue during a recent interview on Beat FM, shared via YouTube on Thursday, the Declan Rice crooner said his lyrics were widely misinterpreted. According to him, the lines were a reflection of societal realities—not a projection of hate toward women.

The 31-year-old artist defended his creative choices by pointing to his collaborations with prominent female artists such as Tiwa Savage and Bloody Civilian. He argued that his track record proves he does not harbor misogynistic views.

“It makes me excited because the moment they stop, business stops booming,” Odumodublvck said. “I am an entertainer, not a pastor, motivational speaker, or engineer. It is a polarisation effect. Some people think this guy is a misogynist. They even killed Jesus. So, who am I?”

He continued: “In the last year, I am the artiste who has featured the most women in the game. What kind of misogynist is that? That is a fake one. I am the kind of person who puts my two feet into something. So, if I am going to be a misogynist, I have to be the greatest one of all time.”

Odumodublvck emphasized that while his lyrics may be provocative, they are not dishonest: “I never lied in what I said. It was in the way I said it.”

He further asserted that criticism is part of his journey as an artist. “Industry cannot hold me. I am unstoppable. Something is in me, and in due time, it will reveal itself. I do not even know what I am capable of.”

He concluded by challenging critics to measure the cultural relevance of his work: “Once you start rapping and try to sound like Odumodu, people will ask you to stop. Let them bring out which line has had more cultural impact than the line on ‘Cast’.”
