Award-winning Afrobeats singer Tiwa Savage has stirred up a debate online with her recent comments about Nigerian men.
In a candid appearance on GRM Daily’s “Thoughts in a Culli,” the music star shared her honest opinions, leaving many listeners divided.
Tiwa Savage, known for her fearless personality and chart-topping hits, was asked about Nigerian men, and she didn’t hold back.
While she praised their fashion sense and their tendency to show care through financial gestures, she expressed disappointment in their romantic efforts.
“Nigerian men do have swag but they are not really romantic when it comes down to it,” Savage said. “They know how to swag and splash cash, but I’m not looking for that.”
The "Somebody’s Son" singer explained that while many Nigerian men are generous, she’s looking for something deeper in a partner.
For her, material displays, such as spending money, don’t substitute for genuine emotional connection or meaningful affection.
Her comments sparked mixed reactions across social media. Some agreed with her sentiment, suggesting that while Nigerian men might be stylish and generous, romance often takes a backseat in relationships.
Others, however, defended Nigerian men, arguing that their cultural expressions of love might differ from the traditional Western notion of romance.
Despite the controversy, Savage’s remarks offer insight into her personal values when it comes to relationships. For her, emotional connection and romance are more important than material displays of affection.
Whether or not her comments will prompt a shift in how Nigerian men approach romance remains to be seen,
