A new Nollywood film titled VeryDarkBlackMan, inspired by controversial Nigerian social media critic VeryDarkMan, has stirred a wave of mixed reactions following its debut on YouTube.

The film, which stars veteran actor Gentle Jack in the lead role, quickly gained attention, racking up over 24,000 views within its first 24 hours of release. Despite the traction, the production has not escaped criticism, with many viewers questioning the film’s narrative depth and its broader implications for the Nollywood industry.

While some viewers took the film as a satirical or comedic interpretation of the internet personality’s influence, others felt the production lacked substance. Several critics expressed concern that such films reflect poorly on the growth of Nigeria’s film sector.

“Mumu Nollywood industry will never grow,” one user on X (formerly Twitter) lamented. “Imagine when there are better stories that need dramatisation to educate Nigerians and the world, but they prefer to be shallow.”

Another viewer defended Gentle Jack’s participation in the film, suggesting that actors often accept roles due to financial necessity. “He shouldn’t have taken the role yen yen yen… Will you people pay his bills? You don’t know if he’s broke and didn’t have any choice, your own is just to criticize,” the user argued.

A third commenter took a more somber tone, reflecting on the perceived erosion of legacy in the industry: “Because of feeding, our legends are stripping themselves of the last ounce of credibility. Kids won’t eat legacy sha, they feed off the currency.”

The film’s reception underscores ongoing debates within Nollywood around quality, storytelling, and the challenges faced by veteran actors navigating the modern entertainment landscape.
