Lateef Adedimeji has made it clear he’s not chasing shadows or feeling weighed down by expectations following the triumph of his blockbuster film, Lisabi, at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
The celebrated actor, who walked away with multiple awards including Best Indigenous Language Movie, shared his perspective during a red carpet chat ahead of the big win.
Adedimeji expressed gratitude for the recognition but emphasized that he doesn't feel any pressure to top Lisabi. Instead, his focus is on growth and storytelling.
According to him, the goal isn’t to outshine the last project, but to craft something even more impactful and meaningful. “I want to tell a better story, not necessarily outdo the last one,” he said.
He acknowledged the AMVCA as a powerful platform that offers validation to filmmakers and actors. In his words, the awards are the African equivalent of the Oscars and serve as a source of encouragement for creatives working tirelessly behind the scenes.
He pointed out that being recognized on such a stage means one’s work resonates with a wider audience and has met a standard of excellence.
However, the nollywood star star was also quick to note that every creator's effort is valid even if it goes unnoticed by award platforms.
Recognition, he said, should not be the only yardstick for measuring success. “Whether your work is nominated or not, what truly matters is that you keep trying,” he added.
