Federal Government Disburses Conditional Cash Transfers to 2.3 Million Nigerian Households in Economic Relief Effort

The Federal Government of Nigeria n a significant move to cushion the effects of recent economic reforms, has announced that 2.3 million households have successfully received payments under the ongoing Conditional Cash Transfer Program. This initiative is designed to provide much-needed support to vulnerable families impacted by policy changes such as the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of the foreign exchange market.

The announcement follows a comprehensive revalidation exercise of the National Social Register, which was conducted to ensure that only eligible and verified Nigerians benefit from the cash transfer scheme. According to Abisoye Coker-Odusote, Director General of the National Identity Management Commission, the verification process is crucial for maintaining transparency and preventing the misallocation of funds.

“We are committed to ensuring that every beneficiary is properly identified and that the funds reach those who need them most,” Coker-Odusote stated.

The Conditional Cash Transfer Program is supported by funding from the World Bank, aiming to reach a total of 15 million households across Nigeria. As of May 2025, about 37% of the target households have received at least one tranche of payment.

Payments to the 2.3 million cleared households are set to commence once the validation process is fully completed. The government has assured the public that the process is being handled with the utmost diligence to ensure fairness and efficiency.

This cash transfer initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Federal Government to mitigate the impact of economic reforms on the most vulnerable segments of society. As the program continues, more households are expected to benefit, providing a vital safety net during this period of transition.
