Human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has disclosed that the phone and car belonging to social media critic, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, are still in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
VeryDarkMan, known for his outspoken commentary on social and political issues, was recently granted bail after being arrested and detained by the EFCC. Though he has since regained his freedom, Adeyanju noted on Thursday that the agency has yet to release his client's personal items, including his phone and car.
Taking to social media to address the situation, Adeyanju stated, “Up till now, VDM’s phone and car are still with the EFCC. This is against the law. Once bail has been granted and perfected, all personal belongings should be returned to the individual.” He further emphasized that holding on to VDM’s property after bail was a clear violation of his rights and a disregard for due process.
The lawyer also expressed concern over what he described as the continued harassment of individuals who speak truth to power. “VeryDarkMan is not a criminal. He’s a citizen expressing his views. Silencing voices through arrests and intimidation must not be tolerated in a democratic society,” Adeyanju added.
Supporters of VDM have also called on the EFCC to act within the law and immediately return the seized items. Many have taken to social media to demand transparency and fairness, accusing the agency of high-handedness.
As of the time of this report, the EFCC has not issued an official statement regarding the continued withholding of VeryDarkMan’s belongings. The situation continues to draw public attention and criticism from civil society groups and legal advocates.
