The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied reports circulating on social media about the arrest of popular social media influencer VeryDarkMan (VDM).

The claim, initially reported by BBC News Pidgin, suggested that the EFCC had detained VDM after multiple petitions were filed against him.

According to the report, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the arrest and mentioned that VDM would be released once he met his bail conditions, with further legal proceedings to follow.

However, the EFCC swiftly countered this narrative, labeling the report as “fake news” and denying any involvement in VDM's arrest.

In a statement posted on its official social media platforms, the EFCC shared a screenshot of the BBC article but did not offer additional details or clarifications regarding the matter. This response came just hours after the initial claims sparked widespread attention.

The controversy surrounding VDM's alleged detention began when reports indicated that he was apprehended while visiting a branch of GTBank in Garki, Abuja.

The arrest quickly became a subject of online debate, with many social media users accusing the bank of collaborating with the EFCC to facilitate the influencer's detention. These accusations added fuel to the fire, as fans and critics alike raised concerns about the motives behind the alleged arrest

This incident has further fueled discussions on the role of financial institutions and law enforcement agencies in Nigeria, particularly regarding the transparency of their actions in handling cases related to public figures.

The EFCC’s swift dismissal of the arrest allegations highlights the ongoing tension between the media, public figures, and the Nigerian government’s enforcement bodies.
