The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, has confirmed that Nigerian music stars Davido and Asa will headline the opening ceremony of the 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The event is scheduled to hold on Sunday at 5 p.m. at the MKO Abiola Stadium, and will be officially declared open by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Olopade, who also chairs the Main Organising Committee, said the festival is designed to reflect the prestige and excitement of a global sporting event.
“This is our own Olympics, and from start to finish, the festival must portray that global feel, both in competition and organisation,” he stated in a release signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Kola Daniel.
He noted that both the NSC and the Ogun State Government have collaborated to ensure a world-class experience for the opening ceremony.
“I have spent the last two years saying Ogun State will host the best festival, but doubters never believed,” Olopade said. “Beyond the aesthetic you are seeing here today, which confirms to everyone what I have been saying, from the opening ceremony to the Games proper, you will be seeing the best.”
Highlighting the preparations, he added that the first two days of the festival have gone smoothly, with no complaints about accommodation or feeding—an achievement he believes sets a new standard.
“I might not reveal all, but I can tell you that Davido will be closing it up, and Asa will be starting it,” he teased. “However, I will not disclose what will be in between. Nigerians should just stay glued to their television because they are about to witness an opening ceremony like never before.”
The festival officially began on Friday with the arrival of contingents from across the country. Sporting competitions, including weightlifting and Kung Fu, have already commenced ahead of the formal opening.
This year marks the second time Ogun State is hosting the National Sports Festival, the first being in 2006.
