Nigerian businessman and socialite, Emeka Okonkwo, popularly known as E-Money, has addressed Nigerians on the need to handle money respectfully, especially during public celebrations.
His remarks come shortly after his release from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he was questioned over alleged violation of currency handling regulations.
In a social media post shared on his verified Instagram account, E-Money urged event-goers and party organizers to adopt lawful practices when gifting money at occasions.
Speaking calmly in a video recorded aboard a private aircraft, he emphasized the importance of obeying Nigeria’s financial laws and maintaining dignity when celebrating.
Without directly referring to his arrest, E-Money subtly acknowledged the need for awareness and education, stressing that ignorance of the law is no excuse.
He encouraged Nigerians to use bowls, envelopes, or other acceptable methods to present cash gifts rather than spraying or throwing money on the ground, a practice that has long drawn criticism from authorities.
His message also echoed recent warnings issued by the EFCC concerning the misuse of both local and foreign currencies in public gatherings.
The commission has made it clear that actions such as spraying, stepping on, or mishandling the Naira are violations that could lead to prosecution under the Central Bank of Nigeria Act.
E-Money’s statement appears to be both a caution and a call for change, urging Nigerians to embrace a culture of responsible celebration. His public stance may also be an attempt to align with the EFCC’s push for greater financial discipline at social events.
The EFCC has vowed to intensify its enforcement drive and continues to appeal to citizens to treat the Naira with the respect it deserves.
