Veteran Nigerian highlife star Bright Chimezie has expressed appreciation to Davido and Omah Lay for sampling his iconic track “Because of English” in their collaborative song “With You.”
In a video shared via his Instagram account on Thursday, the legendary performer was seen dancing energetically to the new track while showering praise on the younger artists for honoring his musical legacy.
“You can see I am vibing to the song already. It’s a beautiful piece of work, very wonderful. I appreciate the fact that you said you picked the inspiration from this song I recorded many years ago; I appreciate you for that,” Chimezie said.
Responding to the warm gesture, Davido took to the comment section and wrote in Igbo, “Ihe di ka gi akokwala m. Chief Sir Bright Chimezie, Ezigbote Onye Egwu,” which means, “People like you inspire me. Chief Sir Bright Chimezie, a true music legend.”
The track “With You,” produced by Tempoe and featured on Davido’s fifth studio album, blends Highlife and Funk elements—genres that Bright Chimezie helped popularize in Nigeria during the 1970s and 80s.
