Nigerian music star Shallipopi has made it clear he will no longer attend the Headies Awards after a disappointing experience at the 17th edition of the event.
Despite winning the Best Rap Single category for his popular track "Cast," Shallipopi revealed he felt embarrassed during the ceremony.
Instead of receiving a plaque on stage as expected, he was only given a handshake, a moment he described as humiliating.
Taking to social media to express his frustration, Shallipopi stated that he did not even want the award and called for it to be given to "real rappers" who truly fit the category. He further vowed to boycott future editions of the Headies, stating he would go to great lengths to ensure he does not attend.
He wrote: “The next one if una see me make I bend. I nor go even lie for una sef, I nor want that award. Give the real rappers wey dey the category. Me, Shallipopi I nor be rapper.”
Fans reacted with mixed feelings, with some supporting Shallipopi’s decision and others expressing disappointment at the Headies organizers.
Many argued that artists deserve better treatment, especially after achieving notable success.
This isn’t the first time Shallipopi has made headlines for his outspoken nature.
Recently, he gifted a fan one million naira after the fan praised his song, a move that further endeared him to his followers.
As the controversy continues to stir conversations online, it remains to be seen if the Headies organizers will respond to Shallipopi’s claims.
For now, the singer seems resolute in his decision to stay away from future awards ceremonies.
