Fuji musician Okunola Saheed, better known as Osupa, has decided to withdraw his legal case against controversial singer Badmus Okikiola, popularly known as Portable.
Osupa’s attorney, Ahmed Opalekunde, confirmed to The PUNCH Online on Tuesday that a formal notice of withdrawal had been submitted to the Upper Area Court 1 of the High Court in Ilorin.
On Monday, Portable appeared in court after the Kwara State Police Command took him there following Osupa’s formal complaint.
Osupa had reported Portable to the police, accusing him of criminal defamation, intimidation, inciting public unrest, and cyberstalking.
These alleged offences were claimed to breach multiple legal provisions, including Section 392 (criminal defamation), Section 114 (inciting disturbance), and Section 397 (criminal intimidation) of the Penal Code. The accusations also fell under Sections 24(1)(b) and 24(2)(c) of the Cybercrimes Act, 2015, as well as Sections 10 and 13 of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law, 2020.
In an interview with The PUNCH on Tuesday, Osupa’s lawyer disclosed that his client had instructed him to withdraw the case after several prominent industry figures intervened and pleaded for a resolution. Osupa, the lawyer added, had opted to settle the matter with Portable outside the courtroom.
The letter of withdrawal, however, included a caution from Osupa, requesting Portable to refrain from making any further defamatory remarks or publications.
The letter read: “Our client, the nominal complainant, has been urged by various stakeholders in the music industry and notable figures in society to withdraw the case for the sake of public peace. On behalf of our client, we hereby apply to withdraw the case and bring it to a close as the matter has been resolved amicably.”
It further stated, “We respectfully ask the court to admonish the defendant and warn him against any future statements or actions intended to defame our client or his business interests.”
Notably, Osupa had accused Portable of using a live stream video to insult him and damage his reputation. He also alleged that Portable had falsely claimed Osupa removed his music from platforms like Apple Music and Spotify, which could have negatively impacted his earnings and reputation.
The petition mentioned that during a live Instagram broadcast on March 19, 2025, Portable made disparaging remarks about Osupa, accusing him of jealousy and trying to sabotage his career.
In the widely shared video, Portable was quoted saying, “This man dey try to bring down my shine! He be like person wey dey chop snail with shell—him no get sense. Osupa na tortoise. When Apple Music and Spotify wan drop money for me, na him remove my song from platform make I no see money.”
Osupa described the comments as harmful, provocative, and damaging to his character, stating that they had caused public unrest and tension.
Meanwhile, on Monday, Chief Magistrate Sunday Adeniyi, in a brief ruling, granted Portable bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties. One surety had to be the chairman of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria, while the other must own property in the Government Reserved Area within the court’s jurisdiction.
