The sudden and tragic death of Nigerian boxer Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju, who collapsed during a fight in Ghana, has sent shockwaves through the sports community.
The 40-year-old former National and West African light-heavyweight champion, known for his skill and resilience, was participating in an undercard bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena on March 29, 2025, when the unfortunate incident occurred. Olanrewaju was facing Accra-born John Mbanugu, nicknamed “Power,” when he suddenly collapsed in the ring.
Despite immediate medical attention from professionals on-site, Olanrewaju was pronounced dead shortly after the incident. The cause of death was confirmed by an autopsy, which revealed that the boxer had succumbed to sudden cardiac arrest.
According to Remi Aboderin, the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control and President of the West African Boxing Union, the initial results showed that Cardiac arrest was the primary cause. However, further investigations are required to understand the full extent of his heart condition. As a result, Olanrewaju's body will not be released to Nigeria for burial until about two weeks for additional inquiries.
This tragic event has raised awareness about the potential health risks involved in boxing, particularly the importance of thorough medical checks and the need for precautionary measures to protect athletes. Olanrewaju’s untimely death has left a void in Nigerian boxing, with fans and colleagues mourning the loss of a promising and accomplished fighter.
