The CEO of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, has vehemently denied accusations that the telecommunications giant steals customer data, calling such allegations unfounded. His comments come as concerns about data depletion have been voiced by customers in both Ghana and Nigeria.

Many subscribers have raised alarms over unexplained data consumption, prompting complaints to regulatory bodies like the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). These concerns are particularly prevalent in Nigeria, where MTN is the largest telecom operator with over 80 million users.

Addressing these claims during an interview at MTN House in Accra, Blewett stated that he has faced similar accusations in every market he's worked in, not just at MTN. He explained that there is no financial incentive for the company to engage in such practices, noting that his personal bonus is tied to the company’s declared revenue, meaning that any tampering with customer data would jeopardize his earnings.

He further attributed the rapid depletion of data to the transition from 3G and 4G networks to 5G, as well as the increased consumption of data-heavy content like video streaming. According to Blewett, the growth in network speed and capacity has inadvertently led to faster data usage, but there is no deliberate intent to siphon data from customers.

While the company’s leadership seeks to dispel these accusations, Blewett called for transparency and vowed to continue improving services to meet the evolving demands of their customers. As the debate over data depletion continues, MTN remains committed to addressing customers' concerns and ensuring that their service delivery aligns with expectations.
