How Rudeboy’s "Bank Alert" Was Almost a Solo Hit Before It Became a P-Square Song

 

Rudeboy whose real name is Paul Okoye, in a recent revelation, opened up about the true story behind the hit song "Bank Alert." What many fans thought was a smooth P-Square comeback actually had a dramatic backstory involving music legends late Onyeka Onwenu and late Mr Ibu. Here's everything you need to know.

The Untold Story Behind "Bank Alert"

According to Rudeboy, "Bank Alert" was never intended to be a P-Square song. At the time of writing it, he and his twin brother Peter Okoye were not on speaking terms, and he had planned to release it as a solo track under his personal brand, Rudeboy.

"I wrote 'Bank Alert' when we had issues," Rudeboy explained. "It was meant to be a Rudeboy song. I am the one who wrote 99% of P-Square's songs, but I never really say that anywhere."

When it came time to shoot the music video, Rudeboy contacted two iconic Nigerian entertainers — Onyeka Onwenu and Mr Ibu — to play the role of parents in the storyline. However, things didn’t go as smoothly as he expected.

When Rudeboy informed Onyeka Onwenu that the project was solely his and not a P-Square collaboration, she questioned why he was excluding Peter. Despite his explanations, she insisted that she would not participate unless his brother was involved.

"She said she won’t come if I don’t include my brother," Rudeboy recalled.

At the same time, Mr Ibu’s availability caused further delays, leading to multiple schedule changes. Rudeboy shot some scenes separately with Mr Ibu, including private jet scenes, hoping to push forward. But behind the scenes, fate was working to bring the brothers back together.

During this tense period, Peter eventually reached out and reconciled with Rudeboy. Shortly after, the music video director contacted Rudeboy and offered to reshoot the video free of charge in honor of their reunion.

"I asked the director how much I would pay for another video, and he said, 'Don’t worry, I’ll shoot it for free for your brother’s sake,'" Rudeboy said.

Thus, "Bank Alert" evolved from a planned Rudeboy solo hit into a full-fledged P-Square comeback anthem a moment many fans celebrated without knowing the emotional and professional struggles behind it.
