Legendary Nigerian musician, Evangelist Ebenezer Obey, has assured fans that he is very much alive, following the circulation of unfounded rumours about his demise.
The 83-year-old juju maestro appeared in a lively video message on Tuesday, where he addressed the fake news with his trademark humour and musical flair. Singing in a mix of Yoruba, English, and Pidgin, Obey shut down the speculation with a spirited chorus, directly countering the claims being spread online.
“I’m not dead. That’s not my story. That’s not how it ends,” he declared joyfully.
The rumour, which began making rounds late Monday, had caused a frenzy on social media, with condolence messages flooding platforms like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter). Some fans, clearly alarmed, rushed to confirm the news, only to be met with relief hours later.
Obey’s longtime aide, Tope Olukole, also weighed in during a live TV appearance, describing the rumour as “completely false” and “hurtful.” He confirmed that the music icon is in good health and recently joined family members to celebrate his son-in-law’s 50th birthday.
“It’s unfortunate that people would start such a rumour,” Olukole said. “He’s been spending quality time with family and is still active.”
Obey, who recently marked his 83rd birthday with a thanksgiving event, has been a major figure in Nigeria’s music industry for over five decades. His fans across the globe continue to hold him in high esteem, not just for his music but for his spiritual and cultural influence.
This incident is a reminder of the dangers of unchecked information, especially in an era where social media can amplify falsehoods within minutes. For now, fans can rest easy knowing their beloved icon remains very much alive and in good spirits.
