Pascal Gabriel Dozie, the renowned Nigerian businessman and founder of the defunct Diamond Bank Plc, has died at the age of 85. His passing was confirmed by his family in a statement released on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. The statement, signed by his son Uzoma Dozie, described him as a man of deep faith, integrity, and dedication to service.
Born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State, Dozie was raised in a strong Catholic household. His father, Charles Dozie, was a catechist, a background that shaped Pascal’s values and commitment to service.
He began his early education at Our Lady’s School in Emekuku before advancing to Holy Ghost Juniorate Seminary and Holy Ghost College in Owerri. He later moved to the United Kingdom, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the London School of Economics and a Master’s in Administrative Science from City University, London.
In 1990, Dozie founded Diamond Bank, which grew into one of Nigeria’s most respected financial institutions before merging with Access Bank. A visionary leader, he passed the baton of leadership to his son, Uzoma, before stepping back from the corporate spotlight.
Beyond banking, Dozie played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s telecoms sector. He served as the pioneer chairman of MTN Nigeria, contributing significantly to the successful rollout of mobile telecommunications across the country.
His outstanding contributions earned him the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON). Known for his humility and integrity, Dozie leaves behind a remarkable legacy in both business and public service.
He is survived by his wife, Chinyere, children, grandchildren, and many others whose lives he impacted. His family expressed gratitude for his life and prayed for his peaceful rest.
