Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy has claimed that influential figures in the country’s music industry attempted to obstruct his path to success.

The revelation came in response to a resurfaced interview clip featuring veteran music executive Obi Asika, who spoke about gatekeepers in the Nigerian music scene who tried to suppress Burna Boy’s rise. Despite these obstacles, Asika noted that Burna defied the odds and achieved international recognition.

Reacting in the comment section of an Instagram blog that shared the video, Burna Boy confirmed the claims and hinted that the public doesn’t yet know the full extent of what happened.

“This is not even half of the story. They did everything they possibly could to break me. They are still trying their best. Lol. But all they did was create this unquenchable fire that will continue to burn them for eternity,” he wrote.

Burna Boy rose to fame in 2012 with his hit single Like To Party, off his debut project L.I.F.E (Leaving an Impact for Eternity). Though the track earned him recognition, his journey was marked by challenges that left him sidelined by parts of the industry.

Everything changed in 2018 when Ye, a standout track from his album Outside, became a massive hit, propelling him onto the global stage. As his international acclaim grew, support from local fans and key players in the Nigerian music space followed.

Today, Burna Boy is widely recognized as one of Africa’s top global music exports, known for selling out arenas and headlining major festivals around the world.
