Bishop T.D. Jakes, the renowned pastor of The Potter’s House, has officially stepped down from his role as the lead pastor after 30 years of service.
During a Sunday service, with his wife Serita Jakes by his side, Bishop Jakes announced that his daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and her husband, Pastor Touré Roberts, would take over as the new senior pastors of the Dallas-based megachurch. The couple will officially assume their leadership roles in July 2025.
In an emotional moment, Sarah Jakes Roberts, who was named the co-senior pastor-elect, expressed her gratitude and honor for the responsibility, saying, “As your pastor-elect, co-senior pastor-elect, I’m grateful, I’m honored as your daughter.”
This transition follows a health scare that occurred in November 2024 when Bishop Jakes suffered a heart attack during a morning service, which raised concerns about his ability to continue leading the congregation.
During his announcement, Bishop Jakes explained the reasoning behind the transition, stating, “I cannot afford, especially after November, to risk something happening to me, and you be sheep without a shepherd.”
The decision had been a long-planned one, allowing the Jakes family to prepare the congregation for a smooth leadership change.
A letter released by the Jakes family following the service explained that the transition had been in the works for years, with key milestones including the family’s move from Los Angeles to Dallas and the introduction of new assistant pastors.
The letter emphasized the need to evolve as a church and address the growing challenges facing society. Bishop Jakes will continue his involvement through The Potter’s House Board of Directors while the Roberts couple leads the church into its next chapter.
