President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, appointing Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as Administrator to oversee the state's affairs. This decision comes after a prolonged political crisis in the state, which has crippled governance and threatened peace and security.
In a nationwide broadcast, Tinubu explained that Ibas will work to normalize the situation and ensure the well-being of the people of Rivers State. The President emphasized that this move is necessary to address the state's pressing challenges and restore stability. Despite efforts to intervene, the crisis has persisted, and Tinubu deemed it imperative to take bold action.
The declaration suspends Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs. Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the House of Assembly of Rivers State for an initial period of six months. However, the judicial arm of Rivers State will continue to function independently in line with its constitutional mandate.
The appointment of Vice Admiral Ibas (Rtd) as Administrator aims to restore peace, order, and good governance in Rivers State. Ibas will have the authority to formulate regulations, subject to approval by the Federal Executive Council and promulgation by the President.
