In a jaw-dropping finale to one of the most horrific abuse cases in recent memory, a white West Virginia couple has been hit with a staggering 375-year prison sentence for turning their five adopted Black children into modern-day slaves.
On March 19, 2025, Jeanne Kay Whitefeather, 63, and Donald Ray Lantz, 62, faced the wrath of Kanawha County Circuit Judge Maryclaire Akers, who unleashed a blistering rebuke: “You brought these children to West Virginia, a place I know as ‘almost heaven,’ and you put them in hell. This court will now put you in yours!” Justice has been served, and the nation is cheering.
The couple’s reign of terror unraveled after their October 2023 arrest, sparked by a neighbor’s chilling 911 call about kids locked in a filthy shed. Deputies found two teens, aged 14 and 16, caged in a 20x14 barn with no food, water, or sanitation—forced to sleep on bare concrete amid their own stench.
Three other siblings, aged 6, 9, and 11, were later uncovered, all victims of a racist nightmare prosecutors say spanned years. “These children were targeted because of their race and used as slaves,” Judge Akers thundered, citing a 16-count indictment that nailed the pair for human trafficking, forced labor, and child neglect.
Trial revelations were gut-wrenching: the eldest daughter, now 18, testified to being pepper-sprayed, beaten with pipes, and fed only peanut butter sandwiches while slaving away on the couple’s farm. “I felt hopeless watching my siblings suffer,” she told the court, her voice breaking as she branded Whitefeather a “monster.”
The kids, adopted from Minnesota and dragged across states, endured racial slurs and brutal labor—locked out of the main house like animals. Whitefeather got 215 years, Lantz 160, with a combined $560,000 in restitution ordered for their shattered victims.
