Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Rema has boldly declared himself one of the genre’s greatest artists, emphasizing that his confidence comes from dedication and hard work.
In a recent Rolling Stone interview, the Calm Down hitmaker addressed past comments about Nigeria’s top four artists, clarifying that his statement wasn’t meant to undermine others but rather acknowledge his contributions to Afrobeats.
"Recognizing greatness isn’t arrogance—it’s motivation," Rema stated, referencing hip-hop legends like Kendrick Lamar who confidently own their legacy. However, unlike hip-hop’s rivalry culture, Rema stressed the need for unity within Afrobeats.
Since his 2019 debut, the Mavin Records/Jonzing World signee has been a dominant force, making history with his global smash hit Calm Down featuring Selena Gomez, which won Best Afrobeats at the 2023 MTV VMAs.
His latest album, HeIs, broke the record for the highest first-week streams on Spotify Nigeria in 2024, further solidifying his impact on the global music scene.
With his star power rising, Rema is not only claiming his spot at the top but also championing unity in Afrobeats—a move that sets him apart from the competition.
