As the holy month of Ramadan commenced on Saturday, March 1, 2025, state governments across Nigeria have rolled out extensive relief programs to support Muslim residents, allocating over N16 billion collectively for Ramadan feeding and palliatives. The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, officially declared the start of Ramadan after confirming moon sightings, prompting states to intensify efforts to distribute food and financial aid to those observing the fast.

In Sokoto State, Governor Ahmed Aliyu approved N1.28 billion for Ramadan support, expanding feeding centers from 130 to 155 and allocating N998 million to provide daily meals for 20,000 fasting residents. Additionally, N285 million was set aside for direct financial assistance to Islamic scholars, clerics, and organizations. Senior Islamic scholars will receive N200,000 each, while grassroots teachers and mosque leaders will also benefit from cash and maize supplies.

Jigawa State unveiled a N4.8 billion Ramadan package, shared between the state and local governments. Feeding centers were increased from 609 to 630, offering three daily meals, including Kunu, Kosai, and Jollof rice, to 300 people per center. Katsina State allocated N2.3 billion to purchase grains and essential commodities, distributing them free to the elderly and at subsidized rates to others. Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf announced an N8 billion allocation for Ramadan feeding, alongside distributing 1,250 cartons of dates donated by Saudi Arabia.

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum provided 250,000 bags of rice and grains to 100,000 residents in Maiduguri and over 150,000 people across 25 local government areas. Other states, including Nasarawa, Plateau, Osun, and Gombe, also launched relief programs, offering financial aid, grains, and other essentials to Muslim communities.

These initiatives reflect the commitment of state governments to alleviate economic hardships and ensure that Muslims can observe Ramadan with dignity and ease. By providing food and financial support, the programs aim to foster unity and compassion during the holy month.
