Gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has taken legal action against social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM), filing a N1.1 billion defamation lawsuit.
The lawsuit, filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, stems from alleged defamatory statements made by VDM regarding a contractual dispute between Chinwo and her former record label boss, Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu (EezeeTee).
In February 2025, VDM shared multiple Instagram videos accusing Chinwo of breaching her contract by accepting performance gigs independently without remitting payments to her record label. Chinwo's legal team has described these claims as false and damaging to her reputation.
The singer is seeking damages and a retraction of the alleged defamatory posts. Specifically, she is demanding that VDM delete the posts, publicly retract his statements, and issue an apology across his social media platforms and two national newspapers. Additionally, Chinwo is seeking N1 billion in general damages, N100 million in punitive damages, and N25 million to cover legal expenses.
This lawsuit adds a new layer to the ongoing legal battle between Chinwo and EezeeTee. Chinwo has accused her former record label of fraud and financial exploitation, while VDM has publicly supported EezeeTee, releasing alleged evidence against Chinwo and questioning the fairness of the legal process. The outcome of this lawsuit will likely have implications for the broader dispute between Chinwo and her former record label.
