Nigeria, has passed away at the age of 86. Her son, Professor Yakubu Ochefu, confirmed her passing, stating that she died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday in Makurdi. Maria Ochefu was the wife of Colonel Anthony Ochefu, a former military governor of Enugu State.
Maria Ochefu's entrepreneurial journey began in 1959 when she started selling soft drinks and local brews in the Army Barracks, Abakpa, Enugu, where her husband was stationed. Her business quickly gained popularity among the soldiers, and she became known for her fresh and nutritious gruel, also known as "umu" or "enyi" in Idoma, or "kunu" in Hausa.
The success of her business led to the establishment of Mammy Market, which became a staple in military barracks nationwide. The market was initially intended for the exclusive use of officers and men but eventually grew to include other items and services.
Maria Ochefu's legacy extends beyond her business. She was a pioneering entrepreneur who inspired other women to start their own businesses. Her impact on the Nigerian economy and culture will be remembered for generations to come.
