Award-winning actress Viola Davis recently opened up about her initial misjudgment of Chadwick Boseman’s behavior while filming "Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom." In an interview with The Times, Davis admitted that she was unaware of the private health battle he was fighting and initially questioned why he required extra care on set.
During the summer of 2019, while filming the critically acclaimed film, Boseman received special attention, including back rubs from his girlfriend and meditative music played for him. At the time, Davis did not understand the necessity of these measures. “There was a part of me that was a little judgmental why do you need all that? Little did I know that they were doing it because he was dying,” she confessed.
Unbeknownst to many, Boseman had been privately battling stage IV colon cancer, a diagnosis he had kept to himself since 2016. His condition had progressed from stage III to stage IV, yet he continued to work tirelessly, delivering a stunning final performance in "Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom." His passing on August 28, 2020, at the age of 43 shocked the world, revealing the immense strength and resilience he exhibited throughout his career.
Following his death, Davis reflected on Boseman’s dedication to his craft, calling him a “beautiful man and artist” who had an unparalleled commitment to acting. She admired his ability to immerse himself in his work without ego, highlighting his deep respect for the art form.
Boseman’s legacy extends far beyond his performances. His work ethic, humility, and quiet strength continue to inspire many in the industry and beyond. Davis’ candid reflection serves as a powerful reminder of the silent battles many fight and the importance of empathy and understanding in all aspects of life.
