Dubem Okafor, one of Igbo's most respected poets and professors of English and Literature, has died. He passed away last Sunday in the United States after fatally shooting his wife, Cheryl.
According to reports from the US, 64-year-old Okafor, who was a cousin to the late poet Christopher Okigbo, was deeply distressed after his wife had left him a few days earlier. He arranged to meet her at his sister's home in Reading, Pennsylvania, where he tragically shot her multiple times and then turned the gun on himself at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, police said.
A small-caliber handgun was found near the bodies, and the Berks County coroner declared Cheryl's death a homicide and Okafor's death a suicide.
Chukwudubem A. Okafor, an associate professor of English at Kutztown University, reportedly shot his 37-year-old wife, Cheryl V., who was an artist, multiple times on Sunday afternoon. Shortly after their arrival at his sister Patricia Ofilin's residence on Pear Street, Okafor ended his life.
