In a revelation that's both shocking and somewhat poetic, Spotify has disclosed a massive uptick in the streaming of heartbreak songs in Nigeria this Valentine's Day season.
According to data released on Thursday by Spotify’s Head of Music, Sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okumu, there's been an astonishing 626 percent increase in heartbreak song streams from 2022 to 2024.
Speaking from Lagos, Okumu highlighted this unexpected trend: "Spotify data reveals a surprising trend, a massive surge in heartbreak song streams.
Nigerians are turning to their playlists to express their emotions, with a staggering 626 percent overall growth in heartbreak streams from 2022 to 2024. This Valentine, the sound of love is accompanied by the sound of heartbreak, and the data shows it’s louder than ever before."
Perhaps even more intriguing is the gender breakdown of these streams. On Valentine's Day, male listeners in Nigeria have outpaced their female counterparts in streaming heartbreak anthems, with a 362 percent increase compared to a 169 percent increase among women.
"This could suggest that men resonate with the feeling of heartbreak more and turn to music as a private outlet for processing emotions," Okumu explained. "Whatever the reason, one thing is clear, when love is in the air, so is heartbreak, and Nigerian men are pressing play on their pain more than expected. While Valentine’s Day is often celebrated with grand gestures, heartbreak is a common theme on Valentine’s Day - more than what’s publicly shown."
As Nigerians prepare to celebrate Valentine's Day on Friday, 2025, it appears that music will not only be the soundtrack of love but also of healing from past loves lost.
