Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, cast his vote in the ongoing local government elections on Saturday, emphasizing the importance of peaceful participation despite calls from the Nigeria Police to suspend the polls over security concerns. The police had raised intelligence-based alarms, but the state government opposed the suspension, allowing the elections to proceed as planned. Governor Adeleke, speaking to journalists after voting at his polling unit, praised the peaceful conduct of the process and urged residents to exercise their democratic rights responsibly.
“The process has been very peaceful,” Adeleke said. “I made a broadcast to my good people of Osun State that this election should be peaceful. They should come out and cast their votes and go home peacefully. We should not give them any chance to say there is violence there or there.” His remarks underscored his administration’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and violence-free electoral process.
In a post on his 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) handle, the governor reiterated his dedication to democracy and grassroots governance. “A few minutes ago, I carried out my democratic duty by casting my vote at my polling unit in Ede. I commend the good people of Osun for maintaining a peaceful and orderly atmosphere at polling units across the state and encourage everyone to exercise their democratic right,” he wrote. Adeleke also highlighted the significance of local government elections, describing them as the closest form of governance to the people. “Local government elections are the closest to the grassroots, and getting it right starts with electing the right leaders. Together, we will make Osun great,” he added.
