Valentine Ozigbo, a former Anambra State governorship candidate and close ally of Peter Obi, has made a bold statement about the future of the Labour Party (LP), asserting that the party lacks a viable future. Ozigbo, who recently defected from the LP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed his doubts during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today. He also suggested that Peter Obi, the LP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, would not contest for the presidency under the LP platform in the future.
Ozigbo, a former member of the Obidient Movement, had initially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2022 to join the LP and support Obi’s presidential bid. However, on February 19, he switched allegiance to the APC, citing his “unwavering commitment” to a broader vision for Anambra State. In his resignation letter, Ozigbo noted that he informed Obi of his decision as a “mark of deep respect” for his leadership.
During the interview, Ozigbo emphasized his skepticism about the LP’s future, stating, “I don’t see a future for the Labour Party. I’m happy to live with that assertion, and I would like to be proven wrong.” He further speculated that Peter Obi, known for his past political movements across parties like the ANPP, APGA, and PDP, would likely not run under the LP if he decides to contest again. While Ozigbo clarified that he is not Obi’s spokesperson, he referenced discussions around political coalitions to support his claims.
Ozigbo’s comments have sparked conversations about the LP’s sustainability and Peter Obi’s potential political strategies. As the 2027 elections approach, his remarks highlight the ongoing realignments and uncertainties within Nigeria’s political landscape.
