The People's Democratic Party (PDP) has achieved a sweeping victory, securing all chairmanship and councillorship seats across the 30 local government areas of Osun State, as reported by News360 Nigeria.
This announcement came from Hashim Abioye, the Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), during a press conference on Saturday.
Despite stern warnings from the police and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, to halt the poll, the commission proceeded, basing its decision on a ruling from the Osun State High Court in Ilesa, which mandated the elections.
Voting began in some areas as early as 8 am on Saturday. Governor Ademola Adeleke cast his vote in Ede North LGA and described the process as peaceful, urging residents to maintain peace and avoid violence. "Osun State is a very peaceful state," he emphasized.
Abioye earlier accused the police of sealing the commission's headquarters in Osogbo and arresting some staff members. OSSIEC relocated to an undisclosed location to continue its duties.
On Friday, the police advised against the poll, citing credible intelligence of potential violence. This followed the AGF's request to postpone the elections, referencing a recent Court of Appeal ruling that nullified a previous Federal High Court judgment which had removed All Progressives Congress (APC) local council chairmen.
Tensions have escalated since Monday, with at least six people confirmed dead in clashes between APC and PDP supporters. Governor Adeleke called on President Bola Tinubu to caution his minister, Gboyega Oyetola of the APC, to prevent further conflict.
