The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to suspend the proposed increase in telecommunications tariffs until service delivery improves. This resolution followed a motion moved by Hon. Obuku Oforgi, representing Yenagoa/Opokuma Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State, during Tuesday’s plenary session. The motion, which was unanimously adopted, urged the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to halt the planned tariff hike.
Hon. Oforgi highlighted that the Minister had recently disclosed plans for a tariff increase after consultations with Mobile Network Operators (MNOs). While the exact percentage of the hike remains undisclosed, telecom companies have reportedly sought up to a 100 percent increase, citing rising operational costs, inflation, and foreign exchange fluctuations. However, the lawmaker argued that such an increase would be insensitive, given the current economic challenges faced by Nigerians and the persistent poor quality of telecom services.
The motion also referenced concerns raised by the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS), which rejected the proposed hike, describing it as an additional burden on consumers already struggling with economic hardship. Hon. Oforgi emphasized that telecom companies must first improve service delivery before considering any tariff adjustments. He warned that the hike could deepen financial struggles for average Nigerians, threaten the country’s digital economy goals, and exacerbate poverty and inequality.
Hon. Billy Osawaru, who seconded the motion, echoed these concerns, stating that the poor quality of telecom services provided no justification for a tariff increase. Following a voice vote presided over by Speaker Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, the motion was unanimously supported by lawmakers. It was subsequently referred to the House Committee on Telecommunications for further legislative action.
This development reflects growing concerns over the affordability and quality of telecom services in Nigeria, as well as the need to balance the interests of consumers and service providers. The House’s resolution underscores the importance of prioritizing service improvement before imposing additional financial burdens on Nigerians.
