Kenneth Okonkwo, a prominent Nollywood actor and former spokesman for the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council, has officially announced his resignation from the party. In a statement released on Monday, Okonkwo revealed that his decision to leave the LP will take effect on February 25, 2025, marking the second anniversary of the 2023 presidential election. He cited ongoing internal conflicts and leadership challenges as the primary reasons for his departure, stating that the party’s current state no longer aligns with his vision for good governance in Nigeria.
Okonkwo, who has been a vocal advocate for transparency and accountability in Nigerian politics, expressed his commitment to continuing the fight for a better Nigeria. He emphasized that his entrance into politics was driven by a desire to promote good governance and ensure the country’s progress. However, he believes these goals can no longer be achieved within the Labour Party as it stands today. “My entrance to politics is for good governance, and I will continue to work for it to ensure that Nigeria becomes a great country of incorruptible men,” he said. “This aim can no longer be realised within Labour Party as presently constituted.”
The veteran actor and politician vowed to collaborate with other like-minded Nigerians to chart a new path forward for the country. He stressed the importance of unity and collective effort in addressing Nigeria’s governance challenges and building a brighter future. “After [February 25, 2025], I will be at liberty to join other well-meaning and like-minded Nigerians in charting a great future of good governance for this great country blessed by God,” he added.
Okonkwo’s resignation highlights the growing discontent within the Labour Party, which has faced internal strife and leadership crises in recent months. His departure raises questions about the party’s ability to maintain cohesion and effectively compete in Nigeria’s political landscape. As Okonkwo prepares to explore new avenues for contributing to Nigeria’s development, his exit underscores the need for political parties to address internal divisions and prioritize the nation’s progress.
