Federal Government to Replace JSS and SSS with 12 Year Basic Education System

The Federal Government’s decision to scrap the Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) models and introduce a 12-year uninterrupted basic education system marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s education policy. This move replaces the existing 6-3-3-4 structure with a 12-4 model, ensuring that students receive 12 years of compulsory basic education before proceeding to higher institutions. Announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the 2025 extraordinary National Council on Education meeting in Abuja, this reform aims to align Nigeria’s education system with global best practices.

The 12-year basic education system is designed to address critical challenges in the current structure, particularly high dropout rates caused by financial and systemic barriers. By making basic education free and compulsory for 12 years, the government hopes to provide equal opportunities for all students, regardless of socioeconomic background. Dr. Alausa emphasized that this reform will standardize the curriculum nationwide, ensuring that students acquire a strong foundational knowledge before specializing at the tertiary level.
