Ekkachai Tiranarat and Laksana, the Thai couple who famously held the Guinness World Record for the longest kiss, have announced their divorce. The pair made headlines in 2013 when they locked lips for an astonishing 58 hours and 35 minutes, breaking their own previous record of 46 hours and 24 minutes set in 2011. Despite their remarkable achievement, the couple has since parted ways.
In a recent interview on the BBC Sounds podcast Witness History, Ekkachai reflected on their record-breaking feat, describing it as a “once-in-a-lifetime experience” but admitting it was far from romantic. The competition’s strict rules required the couple to remain kissing at all times, even during bathroom breaks, and they had to pass water between each other’s mouths to stay hydrated. Ekkachai revealed that the experience was physically exhausting and far from enjoyable, though he remains proud of their accomplishment.
The couple initially entered the competition in 2011 for the prize money and a diamond ring, not realizing the physical toll it would take. Despite the challenges, they persevered, using creative strategies like passing water mouth-to-mouth to stay in the game. Their determination paid off, and they became global sensations, with their story featured in newspapers worldwide.
However, their relationship did not withstand the test of time. Ekkachai expressed gratitude for the memories they shared but confirmed they are no longer together. The Guinness World Records has since discontinued the longest kiss category, citing safety concerns and outdated rules, ensuring Ekkachai and Laksana’s record remains unbroken.
Their story serves as a bittersweet reminder that even the most extraordinary achievements don’t always translate into lasting relationships. While their record-breaking kiss made history, their love story ultimately came to an end.
