Former Ondo State First Lady, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has expressed deep regret over the death of her husband, former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, attributing his passing to an over-reliance on spiritual interventions rather than medical treatment for his cancer. In an exclusive interview with Star News publisher Olumide Akinrinlola, Betty lamented that her husband’s life could have been prolonged if he had prioritized medical care over spiritual practices. She criticized the reliance on "mountain climbing, blessed handkerchiefs, water, olive oil, and noisy prayers" from religious leaders, stating that these efforts failed to save him. “If Aketi had listened to me, I wouldn’t be a widow,” she said emotionally.
Betty, a breast cancer survivor, emphasized the importance of understanding cancer as a medical condition rather than a spiritual attack. Drawing from her personal experience, she highlighted how early detection and proper medical intervention were crucial in her own survival. Her journey with cancer led her to establish the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) in 1997, an organization dedicated to raising awareness, promoting early detection, and supporting cancer patients. She stressed that cancer requires scientific and medical approaches, urging Nigerians to prioritize evidence-based treatments over spiritual solutions.
Her remarks underscore a broader issue in many societies where cultural and religious beliefs often overshadow medical advice, leading to preventable deaths. Betty’s advocacy for medical intervention and her criticism of spiritual bypassing in health matters serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of balancing faith with science. Her story is not only a tribute to her late husband but also a call to action for improved cancer education and healthcare in Nigeria. Through her work with BRECAN, Betty continues to fight for a future where cancer is treated with the urgency and seriousness it deserves.
