Trump’s TikTok Reversal: App Restored After Promising Joint Venture [Video]

TikTok has resumed operations in the United States following President-elect Donald Trump’s pledge to revive the platform.

The popular app had been shut down due to a law citing national security concerns but is now being reinstated after Trump announced plans for a joint venture ensuring 50% American ownership.

At a rally ahead of his inauguration, Trump declared, “Frankly, we have no choice. We have to save it,” signaling his administration's commitment to restoring TikTok for its 170 million American users and over 7 million small businesses. TikTok thanked Trump for his efforts, assuring users the platform would soon be fully operational.

The move marks a sharp contrast to Trump’s earlier stance in 2020 when he sought to ban TikTok over concerns it shared U.S. user data with China. Now, Trump credits the app with helping him secure younger voters in the 2024 election, saying, “I have a warm spot in my heart for TikTok.”

However, the decision has faced criticism within Trump’s own Republican Party. Senators Tom Cotton and Pete Ricketts opposed the extension, emphasizing that TikTok must sever all ties with its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to comply with U.S. law.

Meanwhile, talks are ongoing for a potential restructuring of TikTok’s U.S. operations, with suitors such as Elon Musk and startup Perplexity AI reportedly expressing interest in partnerships. ByteDance has denied claims of a sale to Musk, but the possibility of a joint venture remains on the table.

The restoration of TikTok comes as the U.S.-China relationship remains tense, with Trump also indicating plans for new tariffs on Chinese imports. The resolution of TikTok’s status is seen as a pivotal moment for the app’s future in America and its influence on global tech dynamics.
