Nollywood star Stella Damasus has revealed a little-known fact about her family history: their original surname was Ojukwu before it was changed during the Nigerian Civil War.
Speaking during an interview with media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, the actress explained that her grandfather altered their surname to "Damasus" to protect the family from attacks during the war. The family name, Ojukwu, was often assumed to be connected to the late Biafran leader, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, which placed them at risk in the conflict.
"Damasus is my grandfather’s first name. It’s a Greek name," Stella shared. "My original surname was Ojukwu, but that changed during the Biafran war when my people were attacked in Asaba because they thought it was the same Ojukwu."
Ebuka highlighted the surprise many felt upon learning this detail, with Stella admitting that she was born into the name Damasus and only later learned about the name change from her family.
This revelation has sparked intrigue among fans, adding a new layer of depth to the actress’s personal story and the resilience of her family during a turbulent chapter in Nigerian history.
