The ongoing legal battle between controversial singer Speed Darlington and the Nigerian Police took a dramatic turn on Monday as a Federal High Court in Abuja adjourned the N300 million lawsuit against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to January 27, 2025.
Justice Musa Liman made the decision after the IGP’s legal counsel, CSP Audu Garba, requested more time to review a new affidavit filed by Speed Darlington’s lawyer, Abubakar Marshal, during the court session.
Speed Darlington, who has been in detention since 2024, is suing for the enforcement of his fundamental rights, claiming his arrest and detention violate the Nigerian Constitution. The eccentric artiste, known for his outspoken nature, is demanding a jaw-dropping ₦300 million in damages for what he calls an "unlawful and prolonged detention."
Filed with the assistance of human rights activist Deji Adeyanju, the suit urges the court to order Speed Darlington’s immediate release or, alternatively, compel the police to present him in court to justify his detention.
The courtroom tension heightened when Marshal revealed that the latest affidavit was filed just hours before the hearing, leaving Garba scrambling for time to study the document. The IGP’s counsel argued that the affidavit could contain fresh claims requiring a detailed response, prompting the judge to adjourn the case.
Fans and supporters of Speed Darlington, known for his viral antics and eccentric personality, are eagerly awaiting the January 27 proceedings. Many are already speculating whether the self-proclaimed “energy god” will emerge victorious in this high-stakes legal clash.
Stay tuned for more updates on this unfolding courtroom drama!
